hey, if they put poker on ESPN, ANYTHING can be called a sport

Controversy erupts at annual hotdog eating championship
The 32-year-old Kobayashi did not eat this ear because he refused to sign a contract with Major League Eating -- the fast food equivalent of the NFL. On his Japanese-language blog, he said he wanted to be free to compete in contests sanctioned by other groups.
major league eating?
seriously?
they have their own professional association?
yes, yes they do.
http://www.ifoce.com/index.php
AND they're humourously sponsored by pepto-bismol!

anyway, this kobayashi guy ("the tsunami") is the japanese champion and he didn't compete this year's coney island contest but he was in the crowd... after joey "jaws" chestnut won the competition by cramming down 54 hotdogs in 10 minutes, kobayashi slipped past security and onto the stage. security attempted to remove him but he was in a "hell no, i won't go" kind of mood and that landed him in jail being charged with resisting arrest, trespass and obstructing governmental administration.

anyway you look at it, it is definitely more exciting than golf.

oopsie!

one of these things is not like the others
one of these things just doesn't belong
can you tell which thing is not like the others
before i finish my song...well, did you guess?
if you couldn't, don't feel too bad.
a polish photo editor couldn't either!
and it went to print!
either someone is oblivious as hell maybe someone was trying to get his ass fired...

stats

is it statistically possible to be eliminated from the playoffs before even half the season is over???

"Leafs still winless at home"
Lightening rain on Kessel parade

well, that title is a tad mislead; the leafs are pretty much winless everywhere. i'm jumping off this bandwagon... i'll get back on next year.

does not compute

pursuant to today's word of the day, here's a little story that you may have heard about...

in case you didn't know, blackberry billionaire jim balsillie is trying to buy the bankrupt nhl team the phoenix coyotes... he is hoping to move the team that plays an ice sport from the middle of the freaking desert where they can't even fill half the arena on free ticket night to hamilton where hockey fans with more brains than money would gladly go to see games.

so there used to be a bunch of potential buyers in the mix but now it's down to balsillie and the i-don't-know-what-conflict-of-interests-means nhl bidding to bailout the finacially troubled team.

so, usually when one party out-bids the other by $102.5 million, they are the clear winners, right? because not only would it be the most financially beneficial for the team but also because, in an auction, the "goods are sold to the highest bidder"... right?

"... it's normal."

"Ping pong champ finally allowed to date"

if this kid didn't get enough abuse about his choice 'sport' being ping pong, he most certainly would have got more about being banned from dating! well, at least he would have if he lived in north america... the kid is a 2-time olympic silver medalist in the sport...

oh wait! he's not a kid!
he's twenty-five years old! a full-blown (or probably not) adult!

but i guess since he couldn't capture that gold medal and he's getting a little senile due to advanced age, they're easing the restrictions on him and allowing him to have a girlfriend. says his coach: "Both of them are old enough and it's normal." well, so long as it's normal...

consequences

in another instance of someone getting what they deserved...

seattle mariners 3rd baseman adrian beltre might have to have season-ending surgery for bleeding in a testicle after taking one in the family jewels in the 9th inning of a game against chicago. feel badly for him if you will but the knob wasn't wearing a cup so really... it's his own fault.

smarter than a bowl of tapioca pudding

so apparently there IS someone out there so math-y that they used math to predict the outcome of the stanley cup...

17-year-old super-geek and hockey lover lance pridham from alberton, PEI predicts that the detroit red wings will defeat the pittsburgh penguins for the 2009 stanley cup.

seperated at birth

can anyone say 'long lost brothers'?
it's official, instead of coming back to the leafs this season, mats sundin is taking over the role of lord voldemort in the harry potter films.

i LOVE canadian athletes!

so my prediction from the other day didn't come true... canadian athletes raked in 7 medals over the weekend! still less than michael phelps' gold medal count but still impressive i guess... and that poor girl in the triathlon who broke her arm! she should get a medal just for that!

anyhoo... i did get some flack for not appearing not to support our canadian athletes so i thought i'd take the time to address that.

comment from anonymous:
Realistically, to be placed 10th in the world is still quite the accomplishment. You must give credit to the athletes. So they aren't placing in the top 3, but to hear all the gloom and doom from everyone back home when they are setting multiple Canadian records must be disheartening. I think our country needs to stand more behind their athletes, despite of how they place.
Its hard to believe that the USA/Chinese athletes can still compete in the Olympics. The Olympics are supposed to be about amateur athletes and, especially the Chinese, there is nothing amateur about them. They train full time their entire lives for this event.

first off - there's nothing amateur about any of these athletes... no normal people can do what these athletes do. it's like saying golfing is only a hobby for tiger woods. but in events like tennis, basketball, hockey, even ice skating - they all get paid to do what they do (the definition of being a 'professional' in my mind) and then suddenly when olympic time comes around they can all magically suspend their pro status. i don't get the rules on the amateur status deal... seems very fishy to me.

overall, i'm not saying we shouldn't support our athletes or that the support they're getting this year isn't... uninspiring. i'm trying to point out what little support they do get. when american athletes come home, they're treated like celebrities and celebrated in the media and can pretty much live off endorsements if they've medaled. when canadian athletes come home, they get a tip of the hat and then it's back to whatever they were doing before.
if we came back with no medals this year, there would have to be some serious thought put into how we train and support our athletes... now that we have some under our belts, the excuses can flow freely - poor air quality this, injuries that... next time we'll be more prepared!
having a low medal count can be excused away much easier than a zero medal tally.

tangent! don't you just love the canadian reporters? "you've just finished 4th, mere thousandths of a second away from medalling... how disappointing is this crushing blow? what do you want to say to the folks at home?" yeah, rub it in a little more... right when they probably don't want to talk to anyone, make them talk to the whole country! kudos to the athletes for being so congenial.

bah! work has made me lose my train of thought... i won't make you suffer through any more incoherent rambling. hopefully i got my point across.

let's not hold our breath

did not qualify
did not advance
finished 64th
finished last
dropped from 3rd to 10th
medal hopes dissolved
broke a canadian record

these phrases sounding familiar?
they seem to perfectly sum up canada's efforts at this summer's olympic games in beijing. and now they want us to believe that hope is on the horizon...

"Canada poised for weekend Olympic medals"

i'm not getting my hopes up... even if we DO somehow manage to get a medal, it'll probably be bronze. whoop-dee-doo!

let's look at the medal standings shall we?
who has more medals than us?
cuba - 8 medals (1,3,4)
kazakhstan - 5 medals (0,3,2)
azerbaijan - 4 medals (1,2,1)
mongolia - 2 medals (1,1,0)
kyrgyzstan - 2 medals (0,1,1)

michael phelps - 6 GOLD medals
that's right a SINGLE person has more medals than canada! that's actually more gold medals than canada has collected for the past 2 and a half olympics!

barf... i almost wish we wouldn't win any medals at all... then we'd be forcedt o seriously evaluate the training and funding we give to our athletes.

horrifically uninteresting news

like anyone is really surprised??

"Felicien pulls out of Beijing"
Canadian hurdling star to announce today that she has run out of time in bid to recover from injury

seriously... this girl has been nothing but disappointment since the rumbles of how great she could be started growing back before her disastrous hurdle race at the games in athens in 2004.

like owen nolan for the leafs - great assest, but only if he could stay healthy...

amusement

i just read an article that refered to the maple leaf franchise as "a cash cow, all teets and no beef"

it kinda made my day...
also, teets is a VERY funny word.

120 minutes and 3.2 seconds of glory

the ridiculous ass-clowns that are the ottawa senators failed once again to score any goals last night against boston, tying a team shut-out streak of 2.

alfred-clown & co. were shut-out by the leafs (!!! it's really hard to believe, i know... but it's true!) the night before.

the last time ottawa scored was feb. 23 against pittsburgh when alfred-clown scored the winning goal with 3.2 seconds remaining in the third.

at least if i can't watch my team win (consistently) i can watch my least favourite team lose.

by the by, i just thought you'd want to know that the official slogan for the "sens army" (fans) is:
The Loud. The Proud.
sounds A LOT like another type of army that i've heard about...
dammit! i missed polka-roo AGAIN!

more from the annals of the lame...

"Rock stars courted for curling reality show"
Bon Jovi, Springsteen, said to be closet curlers, courted for NBC series that could lead to the Olympics

geezes... curling is nearly as bad as golfing!
even is bon jovi is on this piece-o-crap, it's going to fail and fail miserably...

news from i-don't-believe-it-ville...

so was the world turned on it's head this weekend or what???

first, the down and out leafs actually won a game! not to mention it was against their arch-rivals the ottawa senators! ottawa's been kicking our tails all season along with just about every other teams. hurray for wee small bits of hope...

speaking of wee small bits of hope, the underdog ny giants beat the pants off the not-so-perfect-season ne patriots on superbowl sunday! can you freaking believe that??? crazy... i didn't watch the superbowl or any of the foo-far-ah that goes along with it but i did tune into the last 10 seconds of it hoping that it would be over and a new episode of nip/tuck would be on like the tv guide erroneously told me would be the case.
