coffee? tea? pee?
Bloke pissing in reservoir prompts 8m gallon flush
'Do you want to drink pee?' asks Portland water official
and why the big kafuffle about human pee? you don't even want to think about how much wild animal pee (and poo, don't forget about the poo!) is in there!
besides, doesn't the water go through some sort of processing plant before it gets to your pipes anyway?
i was on vacation somewhere up north one time and they found a dead deer in the reservoir and all they did was tell people to boil their water. no biggie...
way to overreact, oregon!

shake, rattle & roll
EARTHQUAKE!
that's right folks... southern ontario just had an earthquake!
HERE is what the US geological survey had to say about it.
5.5 magnitude quake centered north of ottawa, 15.7km deep.
that's a BIGGIE for this area!
heard it through the grapevine... i've heard from people that the tremors were felt from windsor over into quebec, and from sudbury down to pittsburgh. craziness!
my whole building and the surrounding ones were all evacuated for about half an hour... i guess someone finally (arbitrarily?) decided it was okay to go back inside and here i am!

blood, frogs, lice, flies, livestock death, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, boobs
"Women who do not dress modestly...lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases (consequently) earthquakes."
Women strut their stuff for Boobquake
Women flaunt their breasts in protest
and guess what?
nothing happened!
According to the United States Geological Survey website there were 45 earthquakes worldwide as of Monday evening, including a 6.5-magnitude earthquake southeast of Taiwan and a 5.4 near the South Sandwich Islands region. In fact, over the last six days the number of earthquakes has ranged from 41 to 48.

change is slow...
"I think the internal combustion engine will disappear from the streets of our cities in the next thirty years because transportation will be mass transportation, or probably electrical power."
~ Gaylord Nelson, date unknown
happy earth day
"We're going to have to do a whole lot more, and give nature at least a chance to repair some of the damage we've done."

win or fail: you decide!
knowledge of volcanoes fail or sarcasm win?
the choice is up to you...
Reduce Volcanoes!
They are causing global warming! We need to say no to volcanoes! Otherwise wildlife in the Arctic will be at risk!!
Icelandic volcanic ash cripples European airports

laugh so you don't cry
"He told people he was preparing for a fossil fuel apocalypse, when bikes would reign supreme."
~ of Igor Kenk, convicted bicycle theif
the laughter dies off rather quickly when you realize that this crazy man (thinks of his bikes like his puppies and was ordered by the courts to have a psychological assessment) it probably right...

humans: stupidity AND arrogance all rolled into one!
“It’s pretty amazing when you find a huge puzzle like that on a planet where we thought we know everything.”
who exactly thought we knew everything about this planet??
i'll bet we don't even know one tenth of everything about this planet. and some of the things we 'know' are estimates and hypotheses!
i roll my eyes in disgust!

a bright future in international meteorology
"Until the 1960s, British law decreed that someone found guilty of trying to predict the weather could be burned at the stake.
In the 1990s, the Taliban banned weather forecasting in Afghanistan, calling it sorcery.
Thailand's chief meteorologist was fired for failing to predict the 2004 tsunami. Ironically, the country's previous top weatherman had been fired six years earlier for warning that the southwest coast might face a deadly tsunami.
In 1996, Peruvian meteorologist Francisco Arias Olivera was hanged from a tree by an angry mob after a flash flood killed 17 people. He had predicted 50 millimetres of rain in 24 hours but the town was bombarded with 480 in 12 hours."

earthy fun facts
earth day was first celebrated on april 22, 1970 in san fransisco. this is its 40th anniversary!
more than 20,000,000 hershey's kisses are wrapped each day, using square miles of tinfoil, all of it recyclable. too bad most people don't realize it...
the first major international conference on environmental issues was held in sweden in 1972 and was sponsered by the united nations.
in many schools, earth day is the third most celebrated holiday, after christmas and halloween. but really, what other holidays are there?
april 22 is also the birthday of julius sterling morton, the founder of arbor day in the usa.
increading herbicide use has created a jungle of at least 48 'super weeds' that are resistant to chemicals.
greenpeace was founded in vancouver in 1971.

recession? what recession?
so it appears that starbucks isn't struggling in economic wind... while other companies are being forced into mergers or shutting down altogether and people are losing their jobs & houses, starbucks is thriving so much so that they can afford to give away free coffee for a whole day!on earth day (march 22) if you bring your travel mug (i assume it has to be a starbucks-approved, genuine starbucks product... just try getting your timmy's mug filled there!) into your nearest starbucks and they'll fill it up for free.
now normally i would say everyone and their uncle and their uncle's uncle should get their asses to their nearest starbucks to see if it was possible to bankrupt starbucks but taking gross advantage of their good will gesture... buuuuuut... they ARE trying to promote awareness about earth day and being nice to the environment... and seriously, how can you be against the environment? i'm all for travel mugs and reusable grocery bags and the like but with my brain seriously resembling a sieve, i can never remember mine!
so let's just go easy on the pretentious soul-suckers at starbucks this earth day... hey and if you can't make it out on earth day, they've also promised that if you bring your travel mug in on any other day, they'll knock 10 cents off the price of your drink.

"Rubber Duckies to Help Track Speed of Melting Glaciers"

well i'll be!
"Motorcycles, scooter big polluters"Tailpipe emissions from scooters, motorcycles are far dirtier and less regulated than cars
Despite their reputation as being more earth-friendly than other motorized forms of transoirt, two-wheelers are actually some of the biggest polluters on the road.
so it'll save you a chunk of change on gas and possibly parking (scooters park for free some places) but that extra cash in your hand is being paid out by the environment.

mixed feeling of the day
is the statement "i want to grow my fuel rather than dig for it" socially responsible?
interest and research on crop-based fuel generation is driving the cost of basic food staples (corn, rice) higher and higher pushing the necessities of life out of the reach of 3rd world countries and ever "at risk" people in 1st world countries.
sure, oil-based fuels are a leading cause of pollution... and oil is not a sustainable resource but are crop fuels actually sustainable? we barely have enough farmable land to feed the currnet population and everyday acres of forest are demolished to make room for more... forests that could be helping (albeit probably marginally) to abate the pollution produced by oil-based fuels.
simply stated, we don't have enough space to grow gas and food at the same time.
comments?

this is reportable?
why not just make a headline about the sky being blue or turtles being the perfect pets? everyone already knows so why bother telling them?
"Summer turning out to be wettest ever in GTA"
We're on track to beat a 28-year record if the amount of rain surpasses 271.5 milimetres by July 31.
