let's not hold our breath

did not qualify
did not advance
finished 64th
finished last
dropped from 3rd to 10th
medal hopes dissolved
broke a canadian record

these phrases sounding familiar?
they seem to perfectly sum up canada's efforts at this summer's olympic games in beijing. and now they want us to believe that hope is on the horizon...

"Canada poised for weekend Olympic medals"

i'm not getting my hopes up... even if we DO somehow manage to get a medal, it'll probably be bronze. whoop-dee-doo!

let's look at the medal standings shall we?
who has more medals than us?
cuba - 8 medals (1,3,4)
kazakhstan - 5 medals (0,3,2)
azerbaijan - 4 medals (1,2,1)
mongolia - 2 medals (1,1,0)
kyrgyzstan - 2 medals (0,1,1)

michael phelps - 6 GOLD medals
that's right a SINGLE person has more medals than canada! that's actually more gold medals than canada has collected for the past 2 and a half olympics!

barf... i almost wish we wouldn't win any medals at all... then we'd be forcedt o seriously evaluate the training and funding we give to our athletes.

Realistically, to be placed 10th in the world is still quite the accomplishment. You must give credit to the athletes. So they aren't placing in the top 3, but to hear all the gloom and doom from everyone back home when they are setting multiple Canadian records must be disheartening. I think our country needs to stand more behind their athletes, despite of how they place.

Its hard to believe that the USA/Chinese athletes can still compete in the Olympics. The Olympics are supposed to be about amateur athletes and, especially the Chinese, there is nothing amateur about them. They train full time their entire lives for this event.
